Rs 10.27 lakh worth gold foils seized at Trichy airport

The gold foils were concealed inside a mobile phone charger.A customs department official said that the passenger had attempted to smuggle the gold foils to hand over the same to an unknown person, who may be waited outside the airport or may be in the city for monetary benefit. Further investigations are on, officials said. Trichy: The Air Intelligent Unit (AIU) of the customs seized 40 rectangular-shaped 24-karat gold foils weighing 319g valued at Rs 10.27 lakh from a passenger who arrived at the Trichy International Airport.Officials are interrogating the passenger to ascertain the source of the metal.According to customs officials at the airport, the yellow metal, in the form of 40 foil sheets were seized from Mohammed Ajith, 29, a native of Chennai.Ajith was intercepted by the customs authorities after he arrived at the airport from Kuala Lumpur by a Malindo Air flight in the early hours of Wednesday, based on his suspicious activities.
