WB team assesses FPOs in Trichy

Trichy: A team of officials from World Bank assessed the implementation of Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation Programme (TNIAMP) assisted by the bank here on Wednesday by inspecting the Farmer Producer Organisations (FPO) at Keezhakuruchi in Thiruverumbur block and Saathapadi in Pullambadi block.The Keezhakurichi FPO was launched in 2020 with 1,000 farmers. The members remitted Rs 1,000 each as share adding up to an investment of Rs 10 lakh for the organisation. Pullambadi FPO was launched in 2021 with 500 farmers who remitted Rs 1,000 each as share witrh an investment of Rs 5 lakh, officials said.World Bank infused a total of Rs 60 lakh as funds to Keezhakurichi FPO and Rs 50 lakh to Pullambadi FPO. Keezhakurichi FPO has been running various units to add value to agriculture produces such as oil extraction machine, flour grinding machines and groundnut shelling machines. They also own tractor, paddy transplanter and straw baller. The bank team inspected the machines and interacted with the stakeholders and farmers to ascertain their benefits to them. Over the past five years, more than 1.17 lakh machines have been provided under a centrally-funded scheme. The Punjab Agricultural University emphasizes the need for optimal utilization of these machines. The state government is also providing 5,000 surface seeders for stubble management. The agriculture department received over 1.58 lakh applications for subsidy on crop residue machinery. The government aims to reduce stubble burning incidents by 30% using these machines.Warning issued to banks: Hands off womens 1,000 assistanceThe Tamil Nadu government has warned banks not to deduct any money from the bank accounts of women who received a financial assistance of 1,000 INR. The government has signed agreements with the banks to ensure that service charges, penalties, or other pending payments are not deducted from the cash deposits made under the scheme. The government has also stated that beneficiaries can file complaints if money is deducted from their accounts, and if the banks continue to deduct money, the government will consider switching the accounts to other banks.
