Burglars strike two houses, decamp with gold and cash in Manapparai

Trichy: Burglars struck two houses in Manapparai on Monday night and decamped with 16 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 40,000 cash. The burglars broke open the house and took Rs 30,000 cash, silver ornaments and a mobile phone.The Manapparai police visited both houses and registered cases based on complaints given by the victims.For long, Manapparai has been a easy target of the burglars. "If they install cameras in these areas, the offenders cannot escape the surveillance of the cameras. The couple rushed to the house and found the 16 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 10,000 cash missing.Another burglary took place at a nearby house of Murugesan. He was working abroad, while his wife and children had gone to Meenaveli in Pudukkottai district for a holiday.

With incidences of burglaries taking place frequently in Manapparai area, residents have called for intensifying surveillance through CCTV cameras.The incident occurred at the house of a TNSTC bus conductor Janardhanan at Anna Nagar. The burglary came to light only on Tuesday morning. Police said that Janardhanan had left for work on Sunday, while his wife Gomathi had gone to her daughter's house and was staying there. Residents from the upstairs portion noticed the lock of Janardhanan's house broken and informed them over phone. The couple rushed to the house and found the 16 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 10,000 cash missing.Another burglary took place at a nearby house of Murugesan. He was working abroad, while his wife and children had gone to Meenaveli in Pudukkottai district for a holiday. When the incidences of house break-ins touched its peak few years back, Trichy rural police planned to bring in the surveillance system by installing CCTV cameras in the residential areas. However, the plan suffered a setback due to difficulties in roping in sponsors for CCTV cameras.CPI town secretary of Manapparai, K Mohammed Hussain listed out Bazaar Street, bus stand, Kamaraj statue areas as suitable places for installing cameras. "If they install cameras in these areas, the offenders cannot escape the surveillance of the cameras. Police should mobilise sponsors for CCTVs and provide the people a safe environment," he said.
