Vadodara: Elections for the president and vice-president of Bodeli taluka panchayat in Chhota Udepur turned high-voltage on Wednesday morning, as a woman Congress member of the taluka panchayat defected to the BJP. Both parties have an equal number of members in the taluka panchayat. BJP and Congress have 13 members each in the Bodeli taluka panchayat. In the last term, the president and vice-president were picked through a lottery. However, just before the election on Wednesday, a woman member of the Congress switched sides. Just as the turncoat entered the polling hall, Congress members pulled her to their side to force her to vote for the Congress candidate. BJP members also began pulling her. As both sides manhandled her, cops intervened to rescue her. The woman’s clothes tore in the melee. Election commission officials and police finally managed to get the woman outside the hall. When the election finally took place, she voted for the BJP, resulting in the saffron party winning both posts. The woman made an application to register a case of molestation at Bodeli police station. However, she also told the cops to not act on it, as she may withdraw her application. tnn
