Lord Jagannath’s Yatra to roll out today amid tight security

Vadodara: The Jagannath Yatra will roll out amid a sea of devotees in the city on Saturday afternoon. The procession organized by ISKCON Temple will begin at 2.30pm from Sayajigunj after mayor Jigisha Sheth inaugurates the procession, as per tradition, by sweeping the road in front of Lord Jagannath’s Rath. Nearly 25,000 kilograms of ‘prasad’ will be distributed to the devotees on the yatra route and later anyone visiting the ISKCON Temple too will be given prasad. “We have taken all the security measures to ensure that the yatra concludes peacefully.

Apart from the city police, additional security forces from the other cities have been brought in,” said Manoj Sashidhar, city police commissioner.The cops are playing cautious as the Walled City had witnessed communal violence last month. The police said they are keeping an eye on the history-sheeters and social media to prevent any rumour-mongering. The entire procession will be video-recorded and several police mobile teams will keep watch in sensitive areas.Sashidhar said a joint police commissioner, three deputy commissioners of police and 11 assistant commissioners of police will accompany the yatra. Twenty police inspectors, 72 police sub-inspectors and 2,129 assistant sub-inspectors, head constables and police constables too will monitor the yatra route along with 600 home guards and six teams of mounted police.One company of Rapid Action Force (RAF), two companies of State Reserve Police (SRP) and one company of Sahastra Seema Bal have been brought in for procession security. ISKCON president Basu Ghosh said a large number of devotees from different parts of the country will attend the procession. Nearly 25,000 kilograms of ‘prasad’ will be distributed to the devotees on the yatra route and later anyone visiting the ISKCON Temple too will be given prasad. After the grand procession begins from Sayajigunj, it will proceed towards Kala Ghoda Circle, Aradhana Talkies, Kothi Crossroads, Raopura and turn towards Nyay Mandir.It will then pass through Khanderao Market and end near Polo Ground by evening.
