Anand: Within a span of a month-and-a-half, the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (KDCMPUL) popularly known as Amul Dairy will for the second time reduce its milk procurement price by Rs 20 per kilo fat.From Tuesday morning, Amul Dairy will be paying Rs 640 per kilo fat to farmers of Anand and Kheda districts instead of Rs 660 per kilo fat that it was paying so far. Earlier, it was in August, that the milk union had reduced procurement price from Rs 680 to Rs 660 per kilo fat. Ironically, the dairy’s decision of reducing procurement price surfaced on Monday when union minister of agriculture and farmers’ welfare Radha Mohan Singh was in milk city Anand to attend a national workshop hosted by the National Dairy Development Board on ‘Role of technology in doubling dairy farmers’ income’. Amul Dairy officials, however, clarified that the decision of reducing procurement price was already taken by the milk union because of the current market situation where the global prices of skimmed milk powder (SMP) have crashed and dairy co-operatives are facing a glut of milk. The dairy’s decision has broken the upward trend in Gujarat – a state where farmers get highest procurement price in the country. In August, where the dairy had reduced its procurement price, it was for the first time since over 15 years that the milk union was forced to reduce the procurement price that it pays to nearly six lakh farmer members, who pour milk daily at village level milk societies.
