Respiratory ailments on rise, door-to-door survey begins

Swine flu medicine oseltamivir was being immediately prescribed to category B flu cases that were serious in nature and could possibly be swine flu. But another round of rise in cases of respiratory ailments can be expected when winter starts making way for summer. Any transition in weather is known to be accompanied by an increase in the number of common flu cases. Surveys by Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) over four days this week have revealed this.The civic body began door-to-door surveys in the city after cases of flu, including swine flu started trickling in the city. Officials said the number of respiratory cases reported had peaked when there was prevalence of swine flu as people rush to doctors out of fear.VMC’s medical officer (health) Dr Mukesh Vaidya said the civic body started door-to-door survey drive to ascertain the extent of prevalence of respiratory ailments in the city.

Vadodara: While vector-borne diseases may be a cause of concern this season as they are serious in nature, a large number of persons seem to be falling prey to fever with cough or cold or similar symptoms. Surveys by Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) over four days this week have revealed this.The civic body began door-to-door surveys in the city after cases of flu, including swine flu started trickling in the city. The surveys have been conducted for four consecutive days between Monday and Thursday.Sources in the health department said the present climate in the city was conducive to respiratory infections. “It is cold in the night and hot in the day. Any transition in weather is known to be accompanied by an increase in the number of common flu cases. Swine flu is also one of them and its prevalence is seen in this season,” said an official.As winter sets in, the number of such cases is expected to go down significantly. But another round of rise in cases of respiratory ailments can be expected when winter starts making way for summer. Officials said the number of respiratory cases reported had peaked when there was prevalence of swine flu as people rush to doctors out of fear.VMC’s medical officer (health) Dr Mukesh Vaidya said the civic body started door-to-door survey drive to ascertain the extent of prevalence of respiratory ailments in the city. He said wherever needed, such cases were being referred to urban health centres.
