City’s construction waste, debris to be recycled

Vadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) will will initiate a project to recycle construction waste and debris generated in the city. The civic body has identified a vendor who will make various products using the waste.The VMC had been mulling a project for handling construction waste since over a year now. The VMC has itself struggled to take care of debris generated after it completes razing drives in the city. The waste will be powdered at the unit and the material will be mixed with cement and other materials to prepare paver blocks, benches and other items.Sources said that the city generates at least 60 to 70 tonnes of construction waste and debris per day. Officials said that a formal proposal will now be prepared regarding the project and placed before the standing committee of the civic body.The civic body will be paying the contractor for every tonne of construction waste he processes.

Officials had even discussed the project with representatives of realtors in the city and were eyeing to take up a project in their coordination, but things did not move ahead at that time.The VMC administration subsequently decided to give the process on contract and has completed the tendering process. Officials said that a formal proposal will now be prepared regarding the project and placed before the standing committee of the civic body.The civic body will be paying the contractor for every tonne of construction waste he processes. The waste will be powdered at the unit and the material will be mixed with cement and other materials to prepare paver blocks, benches and other items.Sources said that the city generates at least 60 to 70 tonnes of construction waste and debris per day. Presently, there is no system of processing it and a part of it is purchased by vendors who sell it again for purpose of land filling or levelling to realtors.The processing of debris will also ensure that it does not make its way to storm water drains and Vishwamitri river in the city. The VMC has often drawn flak for debris being dumped into such places. The VMC has itself struggled to take care of debris generated after it completes razing drives in the city.
