Fishermen of Telangana and Andhra clash near Sagar

GUNTUR: Sharing of River Krishna continues to be a contentious issue not only for the authorities of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh over water sharing, but also for fishermen from both states. On Thursday night, fishermen from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana clashed near Vijayapuri South down stream Nagarjuna Sagar.Fishermen from Vijayapuri South in Guntur district alleged two of them were attacked by a group of 10 Telangana fishermen while they were guarding the fishing nets.Eripalli Venkateswarlu, the president of fishermen society in Guntur, told TOI that such incidents have taken place in the past. He said that the clash was between two individuals, and has nothing to do with regional feelings. The state government must ensure the safety of fishermen,” he said.The Vijayapuri South subinspector Challa Suresh said that as the incident took place in Telangana, Nalgonda police have been informed, and requested to take necessary action.
