VIJAYAWADA: Water levels in all major reservoirs have fallen to an abysmal low raising an alarm about severe drinking water crisis across the state. At the moment, tanks are filled with water enough to meet demand for next two months but any delay in monsoon would result in acute shortage of water even in areas that have water resources.

The areas which do not have a defined source of water are already facing severe water crisis and the administration is supplying water in tankers.Nagarjuna Sagar is to hit dead storage in a day or two with water level at 511 ft whereas the dead storage is 510 ft.

The Pulichintala project went beyond dead storage with officials releasing 2.5 tmc of water to fill Prakasam barrage which supply drinking water to Krishna and Guntur districts. The Rayalaseema districts, Nellore, Prakasam, and parts of Guntur district are facing acute shortage of water. Guntur and Prakasam districts which are mainly dependent on Nagarjuna Sagar, which is on the verge of hitting the dead storage level.

The officials have released 3 tmc water to fill all tanks in Palnadu area in Guntur district and eastern parts of Prakasam district.Prakasam collector V Vinay Chand said the eastern part of the district has sufficient storage for the next two months. However, in the western region which is dependent on only ground water is facing severe shortage with many existing bore wells having dried up.

“The district received scanty rainfall in the last four years leading to depletion of ground water table. We have to find alternative sources of water by digging new bore wells in place of dried up ones to meet the demand,” said Vinay Chand.

In Prakasam district, the officials are supplying drinking water with 1118 tankers to 669 habitations in areas like Giddaluru, Markapur and Yerragondapalem in the western part of the district.Similar conditions are prevailing in Palnadu area of Guntur district which is also dependent on Nagarjuna Sagar. Though the present supplies are sufficient for a few days, concerns are being raised if Nagarjuna Sagar does not get inflows in time.
