AP sees rise in cockfights this year despite court ban

VIJAYAWADA: The number of cases booked against illegal cockfights in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh witnessed a huge spike by around 43% this year compared to the Sankranti season of 2018.The police have lodged 914 cases between January 1 to January 16 against illegal cockfight organisers and participants.Additional Superintendent of Police of Krishna district police, S Sai Krishna said that prior to the enforcement they had booked 1,408 people under section 106 of CrPC.Last year, Krishna district police had booked 638 cases against cockfights. This year too, locals did not deter themselves from organising the sport and shelling out lakhs of rupees in gambling.The highest number of cases were booked in Nuzvid, Gudivada and Machilipatnam While law enforcement was stronger compared to the previous year, police sources admitted that many cockfights took place discreetly in the border areas of Telangana, like Nandigama , Jaggaiahpet and others with local political support.The number of cases against the sport had seen a spike of around 250 per cent with 1,045 cases being registered in 2018 as well, in both Vijayawada and rest of the Krishna district.This year too, Vijayawada and Krishna district police witnessed more than 100 per centincrease.The police had formulated inter-departmental teams with the local revenue officers to crackdown against the organisers of the blood sport this year.On January 10, an attempt to organise and participate in a cockfight competition took the lives of two youngsters at Chittapur village of Sunder Chatrai mandal of Krishna district.The police had received a tip-off about a cockfight competition being conducted in the outskirts of Chittapur area in Andhra Pradesh.Special teams and police raided the place, during which two youngsters fled from the scene.When the police were trying to chase them, the youngsters jumped into a well to hide and sustained serious injuries, eventually resulting in their deaths.
