Polavaram: Whether one likes it or not, the prestigious Polavaram project is a potential poll issue in this election. As the project is the lifeline for the state after bifurcation, issues connected to the project and its progress too are important for parties to win or lose. The state government has claimed that 66.36% project work has been completed so far and the rest would have to be completed in the next two years.Though the state government had initially planned to complete the base work of the project and give water on gravity by 2018, it could not reach the target due to delay in works, including monsoon. The new target is 2019 kharif season, which is scheduled to begin in June if monsoons arrive early as expected.The project also received the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) award for its speedy execution. The Pattiseema Project, a lift irrigation scheme pumping water from the Godavari and send to Krishna delta through the Polavaram left main canal is also one of the success stories for the government and TDP YSRC, however, finds fault with the corruption involved in the project, particularly Pattiseema. YSRC says that left main canal of the project was 80% completed during the late YS Rajasekhar Reddy’s period and TDP government has just engaged a few motor pumps to give water to the Krishna delta. The opposition claims that the Polavaram Project works too were initiated by the Rajasekhar Reddy government and all clearances for the project were secured during his term. The opposition finds massive corruption in the Pattiseema project and the party is highlighting this corruption in the electioneering.
