Police assault, detain photo journalist outside chief minister's camp office

Assistant commissioner of police PB Prasad said the police on duty had taken Maridaiah into custody as they found his activities suspicious. He said that around 10 police officers surrounded him and took him to the police station station which is adjacent to the CM's camp office.Maridaiah alleged that sub-inspector G Srinivas slapped him and confiscated his camera. The police physically assaulted me for no reason," Maridaiah said.Reacting to the incident, the police said the incident occurred due to some misunderstanding.

VIJAYAWADA: The Commissioner's Task Force (CTF) police allegedly assaulted and detained a photo journalist for taking pictures of an ambulance that entered the chief minister's camp office here on Friday.According to reports, the ambulance came from Kandukuru in Prakasam district, where the relatives of an ill-person are seeking monetary aid from the chief minister's relief fund. The photojournalist, Bandaru Maridaiah (31), works for a vernacular daily. He said that around 10 police officers surrounded him and took him to the police station station which is adjacent to the CM's camp office.Maridaiah alleged that sub-inspector G Srinivas slapped him and confiscated his camera. "I was only taking the pictures of the patient and the ambulance. The police physically assaulted me for no reason," Maridaiah said.Reacting to the incident, the police said the incident occurred due to some misunderstanding. He added that the CM's camp office is a high-security area.Soon after the incident, Andhra Pradesh Photojournalists Association protested outside the Suryaraopet police station. They raised slogans against the task force police and said their highhanded behaviour would not be tolerated. They demanded action be taken against the police officers.City police commissioner D Gautam Sawang promised that the issue will be looked into. A case was filed.
