Campaign against proposed amendments to LA Act

CPI(M) State secretary P. Madhu said that the Left parties, along with other like-minded political parties, would organise agitations throughout the State. Activists and leaders of the CPI, the CPI(M) and the Kula Vivaksha Porata Sangam on Thursday organised a signature campaign against the proposed amendments to the Land Acquisition Act 2013, at Dharna Chowk here on Thursday. “The Land Acquisition Act 2013 is a result of the Left parties’ long struggle. Bhu Hakkula Parirakshna Porata Committee conveners Jalli Wilson, V Venkateswarrlu, and Rythu Sangham leaders Y. Kesava Rao Yalamanda Rao were among those who participated in the campaign. There should not be any amendment and we want the implementation of land reforms in accordance with the Act,” he said.

The activists demanded that the State government withdraw its proposal of introducing the amendment Bill in the ongoing Assembly session. CPI State secretary K. Ramakrishna said that both the Union and State governments were trying to grab land from farmers forcibly and and in turn were doling out to corporate entities. “The Land Acquisition Act 2013 is a result of the Left parties’ long struggle. There should not be any amendment and we want the implementation of land reforms in accordance with the Act,” he said. “As per the Act, once land is acquired, the beneficiary will have to start the project or industry within five years,” he pointed out. Several lands were lying vacant as no project was taken up and the beneficiaries were trying to sell the land to corporate entities, he added. Plight of displaced persons Mr. Ramakrishna said that the Left parties and other organisations would fight against the amendment Bill which was rejected in the Rajya Sabha. “The displaced people of the Polavaram and Vamsadhara projects are still facing problems,” he said.
