ISRO setup to harness space technology for national development

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was set up in 1969

    Formed on August 15, 1969, ISRO superseded Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) established in 1962 by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and scientist Vikram Sarabhai. The establishment of ISRO thus institutionalized space activities in India.

  • 14 Indian banks nationalised in 1969

    Commercial banks belonged to the private sector those times. Since these commercial banks were run by business houses, they failed in helping the government in many ways. Hence, the government decided to nationalize 14 major commercial banks including Central Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Punjab National Bank, Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, Allahabad Bank etc.and these was nationalize on July 19, 1969.

  • Rajdhani Express introduced in 1969

    Rajdhani Express was introduced in 1969 and its first service was started from March 3, for providing fast connections from New Delhi to the capital cities of various states in India. The first Rajdhani Express left New Delhi station for Howrah station to cover a distance of 1,445 km in 17 hours 20 mins. Currently, Eastern Railway is the operator of the express.

  • The third president of India Zakir Husain passed away in 1969

    Zakir Husain was the third president of India, an educationist, and intellectual, Husain was the country's first Muslim president, and also the first to die in office. He died on 3 May 1969, the first Indian President to die in office. He is buried along with his wife (who died some years later) on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.
