Hindi is one of the most widely used languages by people to communicate in the world. We all know that it is Sanskrit which is considered to be a foundation language of many languages but not many know things Hindi. Hindi Divas is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Beohar Rajendra Simha, who contributed on stressing the importance of Hindi.

On the 68th anniversary of Hindi to be adopted as one of the official languages of India, have a look at some of the amazing facts about the Hindi language.

1.       India is the country with the maximum number of languages. Not one or two but it has some 461 languages.

2.       Hindi script is phonetic in nature, meaning that unlike languages like English, it is written the way it is pronounced.

3.       In 1881, the state of Bihar replaced Urdu with Hindi as its sole official state language thus becoming the first state of India to adopt Hindi as their official language.

4.       Apart from India, Hindi is also spoken in Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad, Tobago and Nepal.

5.       ‘Namaste’ is the most used word in Hindi

6.       Hindi is derived from a Persian word ‘hind’ which means land of the river Indus.

7.       Words like ‘guru’, ‘jungle’, ‘karma’, ‘yoga’, ‘bungalow’, ‘cheetah’, ‘loot’, ‘thug’ and ‘avatar’ have been borrowed as it is from Hindi.

8.       It was in the  year2000 that first Hindi web portal came into being named ‘Astitva’, since then Hindi content has seen a progress of 94% as compared to English which stands a growth rate of 14% o the web.

9.       Prem Sagar by Lallu Lal is considered to be the first book published in Hindi. It was a tell tale about Lord Krishna.

10.   The constituent assembly adopted Hindi as its official language of the union on 14th September 1949, and since then the day is celebrated as Hindi Diwas.
