Leading brands Samsung and OnePlus have decided to follow PM Narendra Modi’s idea of building Atmnanirbhar Bharat. Samsung is the largest manufacturer of smart television brand, will make 85%-90% of their TV sets in India.

Along with Samsung, OnePlus is set to do the same and will be manufacturing most of their smart TVs locally to advantage of free import duties of the key component- open cell TV panel. This way they can prevent any possible disruption in supply chain like it happened earlier this year due to COVID during the time when the TV market has saved in India. 

Samsung and onePlus, both have partnered with Skyworth, a Chinese electronics firm to manufacture TV sets at its Hyderabad based plant which is run with an Indian partner as a joint venture. Skyworth will be producing 32 and 43 inches TV sets for the time being.

Samsung has also expanded the extant with home grown contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies to include smart TV models from 43 to 58-inches. Till now, Dixon was manufacturing the 32-and 43 inch models for the company since January.

On contrary, it’s the first time for OnePlus for manufacturing televisions in India after it made a place last year as a global first in the country. The company has recently said it plans to expand its television segment to include smaller screen sizes.

Samsung’s decision to produce locally is to be self-susceptible, make most from the zero import duties and since there was a pressure from the government to restart TV manufacturing in India in order to participate in make in India initiative. Apart from Samsung and OnePlus, all leading TV manufacturers such as LG, Sony, Xiaomi and Panasonic have already been manufacturing in the country.
