India’s longest river ropeway in Guwahati was inaugurated on August 24 by Assam Health and Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Guwahati development department (GDD) minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya.
The 2-km long ropeway links Kachari Ghat situated on the southern bank of Brahmaputra in the main city to the northern part of Guwahati. The ropeway has been made to reduce the travelling time between the two locations by 8 minutes. It is a huge achievement for India; it`s for the first time ropeway towers have been constructed deep inside a major river bed.
Until now, commuting from North Guwahati to the main city was possible either by ferries, boats or roadway which would take upto an hour. The ropeway cable car has been made in Switzerland, and has the capacity to accommodate 30 passengers at a time and a driver. It can handle movement of 250 persons each hour.
