Mobiles, cigarette packs found in jail

The newly-constructed Central Jail is located in densely populated Fatahpur,” he added. Besides, 31 cigarette packs, a tobacco packet and two bottles of cold drinks filled with liquor have also been seized. It houses many dreaded gangsters and notorious cross-border smugglers and criminals who are using mobile phones to run their networks.

Amritsar, April 29 The Amritsar Central Jail authorities have confiscated four cell phones found abandoned on the jail premises during a search operation. Besides, 31 cigarette packs, a tobacco packet and two bottles of cold drinks filled with liquor have also been seized. Though no prisoner has been booked, the police have registered two separate cases. The seizure highlights the fact that how convenient it is for the prisoners to sneaking in mobiles and other prohibited material. Recently, the jail authorities had recovered huge quantity of cigarette and bidi packets from an air cooler. It is pertinent to mention here that the Amritsar Central Jail has maximum number of seizures of mobile phones in the past one year. It houses many dreaded gangsters and notorious cross-border smugglers and criminals who are using mobile phones to run their networks. The close proximity of the high security central jail in residential areas is one of the major reasons behind such instances. The connivance of the jail staff can’t be ruled out, said an official wishing not to be named. “Jail officials take every possible measure to curb the menace but the location of the jail close to residential areas is a major problem. The newly-constructed Central Jail is located in densely populated Fatahpur,” he added. Such recoveries have been made in the past as well. It may be recalled that the newly-appointed Minister for Jails, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, had received a congratulatory call from inside a jail after he took oath as a Cabinet minister.
