Two anti-drug activists attacked, 13 booked

An injured Davinder said the attack had been made by those involved in drug peddling. Devinder, along with other activists, on July 10 had held a protest outside Maur police station for seeking action against those involved in drug peddling. He alleged that he was threatened by these persons, who asked him to not get involved in the campaign against drugs and even pointed a pistol at him. The Rampura Phool police have registered case under the Arms Act against eight persons. He, along with his companions, was in the village when they had some clash with another group.

BATHINDA: At a time when a lot of hue and cry is being made over rampant drug abuse in Punjab, a resident of Selbrah village in the district has made a complaint that he was attacked by some persons involved in drug peddling.Gurpreet Singh of Selbrah has complained that he was attacked on Saturday evening when he, along with some activists, was spreading awareness about the ill-effects of drugs. He alleged that he was threatened by these persons, who asked him to not get involved in the campaign against drugs and even pointed a pistol at him. The Rampura Phool police have registered case under the Arms Act against eight persons. The police, however, claim that though Gurpreet was returning from a meeting on controlling drug abuse but the attack was not related to drugs and the two groups had differences over some other matter.Gurpreet maintained that he was making people shun drugs and certain persons did not like it.Phool police station SHO Darshan Singh said on Saturday, a meeting was held at police station against drug abuse. Gurpreet had returned to his village after attending the meeting. He, along with his companions, was in the village when they had some clash with another group. A case under Sections 341(wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation), 149 (unlawful assembly)and Arms Act had been registered against Sukhmander Singh, Baru Singh, Sunny, Happy, Vicky, Deepi, Satnam Singh and Khan but no arrest has been made so far.In another incident an activist against drug abuse, Baba Davinder Singh , of Kuttiwal village was attacked on Saturday night. He was admitted at Maur civil hospital with multiple injuries, from where he was shifted to Bathinda . Devinder, along with other activists, on July 10 had held a protest outside Maur police station for seeking action against those involved in drug peddling. An injured Davinder said the attack had been made by those involved in drug peddling. The Maur police have registered against five persons.
