AMRITSAR: Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has joined Shiromani Gurdwara Pabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Istri Akali Dal in opposing former porn actress and Bollywood star Sunny Leone using Kaur in her upcoming web series, “Karenjit Kaur: The Untold Story of Sunny Leone”. The series is set to be premiered on Monday.Talking to TOI on Sunday, general secretary, DSGMC Manjinder Singh Sirsa said Kaur is a surname given to Sikh girls and women by the Guru. “To use it for a publicity stunt and to depict the porn life of a celebrity is derogatory for Sikhs all across the world,” said Sirsa, adding that the name, Kaur couldn’t be used for cheap publicity.If the title of the biopic was not changed, he said, they would be forced to take their protest to the producers’ office and take a stern stand against the team of the biopic. He said he had also written a letter to Essel Group chairman and BJP backed Rajya Sabha member Subhash Chandra asking him to withdraw the name of Kaur from the title. If their concern was not addressed, he said, they would protest on his office premises.Earlier, the SGPC demanded an unconditional apology from Sunny Leone for using the word Kaur, while Istri Akali Dal president Bibi Jagir Kaur demanded immediate withdrawal of Kaur from the title and using Leone instead.In a letter, Sirsa has said, “Being a North Indian with deep understanding of Punjabi way of life, this comes as a shock that you allowed a biopic with the name Kaur to be aired on your network. I am sure you have a fair idea of the sentimental value attached with the surname Kaur. Every Sikh girl remains Kaur before and even after marriage. It is part of her identity given by Guru Sahib. We have no objection to Sunny Leone choosing her profession and getting a biopic made on her life but when she had advances in this profession under the name of Sunny Leone, why is the name Karenjit Kaur being used as title.”
