BATHINDA: Police arrested a 19-year-old youth of Jai Singh Wala village in Bathinda on Monday for killing his father and keeping his body in an iron box at home before throwing it in a canal.The arrest was made after accused Karandeep Singh's sister Manjit Kaur got suspicious and reported the matter to police on Sunday. She accused Karandeep and his his friend Gurnam Singh of Bathinda of throwing the body into a canal after keeping it inside a box to destroy evidence.Karandeep had lodged a missing report about his father Sukhdev Singh (45) with the police on June 30. After his arrest, he confessed to killing his father on May 28 in a fit of rage.His accomplice Gurnam is still at large and police are yet to recover the body.Initial investigations revealed that the father and son used to work as labourers in Bathinda and used to stay at Jai Singh Wala. Karandeep used to either come home late or stay back in Bathinda, which Sukhdev did not approve of and the two would often quarrel over this. As Sukhdev's wife had left him nearly 14 years ago, his daugher used to visit them often to do the cleaning up at home.Karandeep told cops that he killed his father on the night of May 28 by hitting him with a sharp-edged weapon and then put the body in an iron box in the house. When foul smell started emanating from the body, Manjit asked Karandeep about it and also about her father.He said he later took the help of Gurnam to take the body and throw it in a canal near Bir village, said a police official.On June 30, a month after the crime, Karandeep reported his father missing at Sangat police station. Village ex-sarpanch Jasbir Singh said when he inquired about Sukhdev, Karandeep told him that he was missing and the matter was reported to the police.Sangat station house officer (SHO) Gurbakhshish Singh said, "On Sunday, Manjit opened the iron box, which still had the foul smell. She got suspicious and reported the matter to the police. On Monday, we nabbed Karandeep and he confessed to the crime. A case under sections 302 (murder), 201(causing disappearance of evidence of crime) and 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC has been registered against both and efforts are being made to arrest Gurnam. Further investigations are on."
