Daughter of Faridkot’s last maharaja passes away

FARIDKOT: Deepinder Kaur, the daughter of last maharaja of erstwhile Faridkot state Harinder Singh Brar, passed away on Sunday. Deepinder lived in Burdwan and only used to visit Faridkot palace in October to observe the death anniversary of Maharaja Brar. The couple had daughter Nisha Rani Devi and son Jai Chand Mahtab.Jai Chand was present in the Raj Mahal when his mother breathed her last. She had arrived here on October 15 this year.Maharaja Brar, who passed away on October 16, 1989, had three daughters and a son. The case is going on in the Punjab and Haryana high court.Her son Jai Chand said that the cremation will take place on Monday at Shahi Samadhan.

The 82-year-old younger daughter of Brar breathed her last at ‘Raj Mahal’ in Faridkot after prolonged illness.She was chairperson of Mehrawal Khiwa Ji Trust, which looks after the various properties of the estate worth Rs20,000 crore that are entangled in legal disputes over ownership.Deepinder was married in 1959 to Burdwan estate (in West Bengal) Maharaja Bir Jai Bardhan’s eldest son Saday Chand Mahtab. The couple had daughter Nisha Rani Devi and son Jai Chand Mahtab.Jai Chand was present in the Raj Mahal when his mother breathed her last. Deepinder lived in Burdwan and only used to visit Faridkot palace in October to observe the death anniversary of Maharaja Brar. She had arrived here on October 15 this year.Maharaja Brar, who passed away on October 16, 1989, had three daughters and a son. His son Harmohinder Singh had died in 1981 in Delhi, and youngest daughter Maheepinder Kaur too passed away.Eldest daughter Amrit Kaur and Deepinder were involved in sustained legal battle which had members of extended family also joining in to get the rights of the properties. Amrit was said to have been disowned by Mahraja.Years back, the former ruler’s two daughters were granted equal inheritance to assets including the Faridkot House at Copernicus Marg near India Gate in Delhi, a palace and Manimajra Fort, properties in Mashobra (Shimla), besides bank deposits, jewellery and vintage cars. The list also included 300 acres of land, an airport, three planes, and about two dozen buildings across the nation.However, this order was challenged the late maharaja’s nephew Bharatinder Singh, son of his younger brother late Manjitinder Singh, among other parties. The case is going on in the Punjab and Haryana high court.Her son Jai Chand said that the cremation will take place on Monday at Shahi Samadhan.
