BATHINDA: The Shiromani Akali Dal MP from Ferozepur, Sher Singh Ghubaya , on Friday hinted at wanting to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections from Ferozepur on a Congress ticket.Though he he is still with the SAD on paper, Ghubaya’s relationship with the party has been sour ever since an intimate video clip of his had appeared before the 2017 assembly elections. Ghubaya, at the time, had said the video was doctored and his son, Davinder Ghubaya, joined the Congress and won while contesting as its candidate from Fazilka assembly seat.Ghubaya made it clear on Friday that he would contest the upcoming parliamentary elections from Ferozepur, but not under SAD president Sukhbir Badal. He said talks were on with the Congress, but nothing was sure till the time ticket allotment got underway.Ghubaya has won twice from Ferozepur, in 2009 and 2014, on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket. In 2014, he defeated present Punjab Congress president and MP Sunil Jakhar by 31,420 votes. Before 2009, he contested the assembly elections from Jalalabad assembly segment, which he had vacated for Sukhbir Badal in 2009. Sukhbir won the byelection from the seat in 2009. “I will surely contest the next elections, but not under the command of Sukhbir Badal. Talks are on with the Congress. It would most possibly take shape. If not, other options will have to be explored,” he said.Ghubaya belongs to the Rai Sikh community, which has a sizeable strength in Ferozepur constituency.After the his video clip went viral in January 2017, Ghubaya had parted ways with Sukhbir on a bitter note, while remaining in the Akali Dal. Before this, the state vigilance bureau raided a private engineering college owned by Ghubaya family in December 2016, over complaints of fund embezzlement.Not even considering him as candidate: SADChandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal said on Friday that it was not even considering Ferozepur MP Sher Singh Ghubaya as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The statement came in response to Ghubaya saying that he would not fight the polls under SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal In the statement, SAD leader Janmeja Singh Sekhon and the party’s Ferozepur district president, Avtar Singh Zira, said Ghubaya had lost the “moral decency and dignity” to play an active role in politics.Lashing out at the MP, Akali leaders said Ghubaya was in a “terrible misconception” that the SAD would even think of his name for the Lok Sabha elections.The SAD leaders said the intimate video clip of Ghubaya with another woman, which was leaked in January 2017, raised “serious moral concerns” about Ghubaya. “Parties which consider Ghubaya’s candidature for Lok Sabha elections would be responsible for betraying moral standards,” they said.
