Bribe via cheque: 2 cops under VB lens

Head constables Chamkaur Singh and Devinder Singh called Kamal Mittal at the police station and threatened to implicate him in the case. Devinder was not available at the police station when Kamal went there and handed over the money and cheque to Chamkaur Singh.The SSP said cops had agreed to collect money through a cheque mentioning just the amount. To avoid harassment, Kamal settled the deal with the cops for Rs 30,000. Kamal, however, informed the Vigilance Bureau about it.Vigilance SSP, Bathinda, Ashok Bath said they laid a trap after head constables called Kamal at the police station on Monday. He said further investigations are being made.“A case under prevention of corruption charges has been registered against both and efforts are being made to arrest Devinder,” he added.

BATHINDA: The Vigilance Bureau has detected a case of corruption by two cops of Bathinda wherein they accepted the bribe money in cheque.Though the amount of Rs 25,000 was mentioned in the cheque, other columns were kept blank.The vigilance on Monday arrested head constable Chamkaur Singh, posted at Maur Mandi police station in Bathinda, while accepting illegal gratification of Rs 30,000, which included Rs 5,000 in cash and a cheque of Rs 25,000, from Kamal Mittal of Maur.A few days ago, the police had booked a case under the NDPS Act against Harbans Singh of Maur, who was close to Kamal Mittal. Head constables Chamkaur Singh and Devinder Singh called Kamal Mittal at the police station and threatened to implicate him in the case. To avoid harassment, Kamal settled the deal with the cops for Rs 30,000.
