AMRITSAR: Congress party’s eight winning MLAs out of nine assembly constituencies falling in Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency have a daunting task ahead to repeat their performance and ensure victory for party’s candidate in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. A race between Jat vs non Jat candidate have already begun in Amritsar with representatives of both faction meeting the party high command before announcement of the candidate.Out of the eight winning MLAs during 1917 assembly elections , three MLAs - Navjot Singh Sidhu , Amritsar East, Om Parkash Soni , Amritsar Central and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria , Rajasansi, were taken into Captain Amarinder Singh 's cabinet and have responsibility of giving good performance .“State Congress have not fulfilled many of its pre-poll promises including distributing free smart phones, one hundred percent waiver of farmers loans, jobs to youth etc. The reflection of non fulfillment of these pre-poll promises will definitely be seen during ensuing parliamentary elections and could give sleepless nights to all the eight Congress party’s MLAs” said a senior Congress leader who didn’t want to give his name.Sources also informed that a Congress leaders group have met chief minister Amarinder Singh to press upon pushing name of some urban Sikh leader for the Lok Sabha seat.“Mayor, local MP and most of the MLAs are Jat Sikhs but the urban Sikhs especially non Jat Sikhs have equal contribution in amassing votes for the party so we believe that an urban non Jat Sikhs should be given opportunity to represent Amritsar constituency which has majority of urban areas” said sources.Sources informed that the non Jat group had floated the name of Congress party’s former MLA from Amritsar South assembly constituency Harjinder Singh Thekedar .Meanwhile there are reports that Congress could field Navjot Kaur Sidhu ,former MLA and wife of cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar and replace the sitting member parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla.“Sidhu has close relations with AICC president Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi and being a star campaigner he is an indispensable asset for the party and I party high command couldn’t say no to him he will recommend his wife’s name to contest the elections “ said sources.
