Amritsar, June 13 Contractual workers of BSNL on Thursday staged a protest demanding payment of their salary pending for the past seven months. The employees alleged that the BSNL had not renewed their contract that expired on June10. The protesters said they had been rendered jobless. Jaskiran Singh Jaj, general secretary, BSNL Causal and Contract Workers’ Union, said the employees were informed on June 9 that their contract had expired. “These employees have been working for the last 20-25 years. Ideally the workers should have been given a notice. Now, the contract employees are demanding their pending salaries ,” he said. Jaj said the employees would continue their protest till the issue was resolved. Protest for wages Mining employees of Amritsar and Gurdaspur zones on Thursday staged a protest over non-payment of salaries for the last four months. Employees of the Clerical Association and Class IV Union, led by Balkar Singh and and Tarsem Lal, sat on a dharna outside the mining office. Balkar Singh, president, clerical association, said, “We have written to the Mining and Geology Department of Punjab to release the pending salaries of employees. Even after the assurance they did not release the salaries. Now we have no option other than intensifying the protest”. Tarsem Lal, president, Class IV Union, said, “Employees are unable to pay for their daily needs and school fee of their children as government has not issued a single penny for the last four months. The government should release our salaries.”
