With pre-Partition police roots, AIG Harinderjit a proud cop

Not just his association with the department, his ancestral roots in the force dating back to 1937, when his grandfather Sadhu Singh was a ‘kotwal’ in Lahore, make him feel proud. The AIG’s father Gurbachan was also a cop and remained Gurdaspur SHO when he died in an accident in 1975. He joined the police force 45 years after the death of his grandfather Sadhu Singh. “Being from the third generation of a cop family, I feel more responsibility towards society and make efforts for its betterment,” he says. When asked how he sees the present generation of cops, he points out that the present generation of police officers are among the best trained and best equipped law enforcement professionals who can tackle any challenge, be it extremism, cyber crime or drug trafficking.

He joined the police force 45 years after the death of his grandfather Sadhu Singh. “This is beyond doubt that policing always remains under scanner owing to the nature of the job. It has become more difficult and challenging with the advent of technology and huge change in the nature of crimes,” he says. Showing the picture of his father Gurbachan Singh, he says his paternal uncles Karnail Singh and Jarnail Singh also served as ‘thanedar’ in PEPSU and sub-inspector in the armed police, respectively. Another feather in the cap of the family is that his brother-in-law (sister Pritam Kaur’s husband) Asa Singh Chahal served as an additional superintendent of police in Patiala and was honoured with Parja Sewa medal posthumously for his act of bravery. “Being from the third generation of a cop family, I feel more responsibility towards society and make efforts for its betterment,” he says.
