ritsar, September 12Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine system disorder in women of reproductive age and those diagnosed with the condition face a heightened risk of developing fertility problems, stated Dr Shilpa Gulati, gynaecologist and IVF Expert.
The month of September is being observed as PCOS awareness month by the medical fraternity.
The doctor stated that adolescent PCOS is on the rise these days due to changes in lifestyle, academic load and a lack of physical exercise.
“PCOS cannot be prevented but weight control is the key to prevention of metabolic syndrome at a young age,” she said.
Expert at Indira IVF Hospital, Dr Shilpa said PCOS was a silent killer and had profound implications for a women’s reproductive health as well as her long-term risk of chronic illness such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease.
