TARN TARAN DIARY The district police have made a plan to pay rich tributes to police martyrs. It will be the first time when martyrs will be remembered on the Commemoration Day to be held on Monday. Acting on the instructions of SSP Dharuv Dahiya, police teams of areas concerned, under respective DSPs, have visited houses of families of martyrs and have taken note of their problems. Competitions were also organised in some schools. A candle march was organised on Saturday, which was led by the SSP and other higher officials, alongwith martyrs' families. A 5-km mini-marathon under the motto — 'Run for martyrs, run for police — was organised on Sunday. Wards of police martyrs, serving personnel, athletes and children from various schools participated in the event. A volleyball match was organised to inculcate team spirit and sportsmanship in individuals. SP Gaurav Toora, SP Jagjit Singh Walia and others have been assigned duties to make arrangements for Commemoration Day. In Tarn Taran district, which was once considered to be a hotbed of militants, the police had to pay heavy price to bring normalcy. It was perhaps at the top in the state in terms of sacrifices made by police personnel. A total of 188 policemen gave their life while fighting militancy. The low-lying area alongside the Beas and the Sutlej, which had elephant grass, was a safe site for militants to take shelter. The border, through which militants used to cross over to Pakistan, was another reason behind the district airing militancy. Terror prevailed everywhere in the district and there was hardly any day when untoward incident was not heard. The people played a major role in bringing peace to the district. Two progressive farmers honoured in Bihar Two progressive of the district, Jatinder Singh of Mundapind village and Baba Sher Singh of Kot Budha village, had the pleasure to share their experiences regarding various management practices needed to manage paddy straw at an international conference held in Patna, Bihar, recently. The conference on crop residue management was organised by Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, and the Department of Agriculture, Bihar. A total of six farmers from Punjab were invited to share their views. Jatinder Singh and Baba Sher Singh, who are associated with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tarn Taran, said they started sowing wheat with happy seeder three years ago by hiring happy seeder from custom hiring centre and were getting good returns. They said they had inspired other farmers of the area to adopt the technology and not to burn crop residue. The farmers were honoured by Bihar Agriculture Minister Dr Prem Kumar and vice-chancellor of Bihar Agricultural University Dr A K Singh. KVK assistant professor Navjot Singh Brar, Dr Rajbir Singh, Dr Harish Kumar Verma from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, and GADVASU vice-chancellor Dr AS Nanda congratulated the farmers for their achievement.
