Couple suicide: Family alleges police inaction

Had the police acted on the complaint, the couple would have been alive today, said family members of the couple here on Saturday. Sunil Kumar and his wife Monika, a government ITI teacher, had committed suicide on October 16 at their residence at Fairland colony on the Fatehgarh Churian road here. The incident came to light when Sunil’s son Sahil knocked at the door of the roon in which the couple were sleeping, but got no response. Those booked were identified as Gurwinder Singh, his wife Rashpal Kaur, Navneet Singh, Thomas, Babbar and Harjinder Singh. Jaspal Singh, SHO Majitha Road police station, said no arrest had been made as the investigation was under progress.

Had the police acted on the complaint, the couple would have been alive today, said family members of the couple here on Saturday. They are perturbed over police inaction in arresting the accused till now. “First, it was the rural police which failed to act on the complaint and now it is the city police which are dithering to nab the culprits,” said Sharda Kumar, mother of victim Sunil. Sunil Kumar and his wife Monika, a government ITI teacher, had committed suicide on October 16 at their residence at Fairland colony on the Fatehgarh Churian road here. Among the accused included a cop who had cheated the victim by fraudulently selling a house that was mortgaged to a bank for loan. They had scribbled the names of the suspects who drove them to take the extreme step. The incident came to light when Sunil’s son Sahil knocked at the door of the roon in which the couple were sleeping, but got no response. When he peeped into the room, he found them hanging. “Even after lapse of a fortnight, the police have not made a single arrest in the case what to talk of providing justice to the family,” said Sanjiv Kumar and Ajay Kumar, brothers of the victim Sunil Kumar, a property dealer. The police have booked six persons on the charge of abetment to suicide. Those booked were identified as Gurwinder Singh, his wife Rashpal Kaur, Navneet Singh, Thomas, Babbar and Harjinder Singh. Jaspal Singh, SHO Majitha Road police station, said no arrest had been made as the investigation was under progress. SSP (Amritsar Rural) Vikram Jeet Duggal said the police took the legal opinion which pointed out that it was breach of an agreement and therefore requires a civil suit while no case could be registered as per law.
