Uncertainty among students, parents over scrapping of Khalsa University

Worried parents of many KU students had stormed the campus asking university management to clear air over the issue. AMRITSAR: Uncertainty prevailed in Khalsa University (KU), a day after it was scrapped by Punjab cabinet with students and faculty members unsure of their future. Fearing trouble from the university authorities, students requested not to be named. One such student, pursuing integrated education course in Khalsa College of Education, which is a part of Khalsa University, said, "College authorities refuse to show us any approval from the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE). With no specific assurance from authorities, fear of losing a year haunts most students.

AMRITSAR: Uncertainty prevailed in Khalsa University (KU), a day after it was scrapped by Punjab cabinet with students and faculty members unsure of their future. Worried parents of many KU students had stormed the campus asking university management to clear air over the issue. Classes in the Khalsa varsity remained suspended on Thursday as the management was also clueless over the development.More than 60 students were seen in small groups carefully watching the statement of politicians on the decision taken pertaining to Khalsa University's future.TOI spoke to some students and their worried parents over the issue. Fearing trouble from the university authorities, students requested not to be named. One such student, pursuing integrated education course in Khalsa College of Education, which is a part of Khalsa University, said, "College authorities refuse to show us any approval from the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE). We do not have any assurance about our college's transfer to Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU)."Waiting outside principal's office, a man who accompanied his daughter, said, "The decision to form the university and scrapping it may be the government's prerogative but to secure our children's future, we will escalate the matter further." Similar resentment was seen among PhD students as some of them had left their jobs to pursue research and face a double whammy — first the recognition of their course and second the financial insecurity.Khalsa University registrar Jaswinder Singh Dhillon said, "At this time, I can only hope that the government sends the notification soon which will decide the road ahead for students. As per information, students will be transferred to GNDU." With no specific assurance from authorities, fear of losing a year haunts most students.
