Amritsar, July 19 The mess workers at Government Medical College staged a brief protest over the non-disbursal of their salaries here today. They resorted to sloganeering against the college administration. They said they didn’t get salaries for the past four months. No sooner they raised slogans, they were allowed to meet the principal, who later spoke with higher officials in Chandigarh and also faxed the demand letter to them. The protesters said they were being paid mere Rs 3,200 per month even after the directions of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research to the medical colleges to pay salaries as per Minimum Wages Act. They said the management of Government Dental College had immediately started paying revised salaries to the mess workers but Government Medical College ignored the letter. The protest was led by Prem Chand. He said, “We have given the administration time till Monday. If the demand of the workers is not addressed, we would gherao the residence of Director, Medical Education and Research in the city. The officials have been claiming that they have not received sanction so far.” Over a hundred workers at the college have been complaining of non-disbursal of salaries for the last four months and less wages being paid to them. “The officials, who get over Rs 1.5 lakh per month as salary, feel that our demand for a monthly pay of Rs 7,500 is too much,” said one of the protesters, who didn’t wish to be named. They warned of intensifying their struggle if they are not heard.
