Johar performs `sewa' outside Golden Temple

AMRITSAR: After having been denied an opportunity by the SGPC to perform sewa inside the Golden Temple complex, Johar Singh, former president of Gurdwara Ghallughar Sahib, Chhamb in Gurdaspur district, performed cleaning and sweeping service at the Golden Temple Plaza outside the shrine. "Akal Takht secretariat has received a complaint from former president of SGPC Jagir Kaur and members and office-bearers of SGPC against a group of self-proclaimed jathedars who have made Golden Plaza (corridor outside the Akal Takht and Golden Temple complex) their Akal Takht. He had re fused to appear before the Akal Takht Jathedar when summoned. They not only summon Sikhs but also pronounce decisions on the religious complaints against them," Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh told TOI on Monday. "All the five Sikh high priests will contemplate over the issue after Diwali and will also take suggestions from Akal Takht advisory board and take decision accordingly," said Gurbachan Singh.

I am not being allowed to enter the Golden Temple complex to perform sewa so I contacted the Sarbat Khalsa-appointed jathedars who suggested that I listen to kirtan for three hours at Ghanta Ghar Chowk and perform sweep and clean sewa the Golden Temple Plaza," Johar told TOI on Monday .Earlier, Johar was awarded religious punishment of clea ning utensils and shoes and listening to kirtan for one hour each for seven days for his poor management of Gurdwara Ghallughara Sahib. He had re fused to appear before the Akal Takht Jathedar when summoned. When he reached the Golden Temple on the first day to undergo religious atonement on Sunday, the SGPC workers didn't allow him to perform sewa and advised him to appear before the SGPC-appointed jathedars.Jathedars to review acts of parallel clergySikh high priests have taken a strict stand against informal Sarbat Khalsa-appointed jathedars and would review their religious actions like summoning and pronouncing atonement.
