KOLHAPUR: Hundreds of Maratha activists in the city, who had gathered at the Dasara Chowk on Monday, called for a Kolhapur bandh on Tuesday to protest against the recent police lathicharge on Maratha activists in Jalna.Public and private schools in the city have decided to remain shut on Tuesday following the decision of the Kolhapur Municipal Transport and state transport utility to stop bus services. Private schools on the outskirts of the city will also be closed.Vasantrao Mulik, the leader of Maratha Seva Sangh, said, "We have unanimously passed three resolutions. First, a court-monitored inquiry into the Jalna police action should take place. Second, we asked whether home minister Devendra Fadnavis should say sorry or resign - The common response was that he should resign on moral grounds. Third, we have decided on a Kolhapur city bandh."Mulik said no emergency services would be affected by the bandh."Also, the talathi exams will not be disturbed. Candidates will be able to reach the exam centre and return home safely. To avoid inconvenience to them, we have decided not to impose a bandh in the rural parts of the district," said Mulik.Medical education minister Hasan Mushrif appealed to the Maratha outfits to observe the bandh peacefully. "Reservation is a right of the Maratha community. I have also participated in massive marches in Mumbai and a hunger strike in Kolhapur. I appeal to the bandh organisers to ensure it is observed peacefully," said the minister.
