Good spells of rain add 3TMC water in dams in Kolhapur, Sangli & Satara dists

Kolhapur: The revival of monsoon in the past two days led to addition of around 3TMC of water in the dams across Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts.The stock in the dams, however, has not reached the levels reported at the same time last year. As per the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), ghat areas of the three districts received moderate to heavy rainfall. The hinterland also witnessed heavy and incessant showers from Friday evening. Major dams llike Koyna, Radhanagari, Tulshi, Warna, Dhom, Kanher, Dudhganga, Urmodi replenished their stock between 0.5 TMC to two TMC. Koyna dam added nearly one TMC water due to the heavy rains in Navaja and Koyna. The dam had around 81 TMC water on Friday and after rains the stock increased to 82 TMC. At the same time, Warna dam witnessed a rise of around 0.80 TMC, while Dudhgangas stock increased from 22.30 TMC to 22.80 TMC. Meanwhile, in Satara,, Mahabaleshwar and Navaja received 126 mm and 156mm rainfall, respectively. Since June 1, Navaja has received 5,357 mm of rain while Mahabaleshwar has crossed the 5,000 mm-mark.Last year, at the same time, Koyna dam had a stock of 95 TMC and it was completely filled by the end of September which is a thumb rule to ensure that water is available for rest of the year. There is pressure from people to release water for the purpose of drinking and irrigation mainly from areas that has received scanty rainfall. Therefore, we have continued 1,050 cusec discharge from Koyna dam, an official from the irrigation departments Sangli circle said.The irrigation department is also trying to get the rivers situated in the downstream replenished. One gate of Radhanagari dam is opened with a discharge of 2,828 cusec and Dhom Bhalkawadi dam in Satara has a discharge of 1,759 cusec.
