Kolhapur: Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders in Kolhapur on Monday alleged that the civic body is awarding contracts for road building work to just a few firms linked to top civic officials. The Sena (UBT) leaders met civic administrator K Manjulekshmi and told her about the poor condition of roads in the city and how Kolhapur is getting a bad name due to this. The leaders claimed the quality of newly-built roads deteriorates quickly. When the works are taken up again, contractors having ties with officials are roped in once again. Sena district president Sanjay Powar said, All the KMC has to do is issue tenders and assign the work to contractors. We believe only a few contractors get the works. Since 2022-23, the KMC has issued work orders for 115 road building works, out of which 65 were assigned to three contractors. Not just that, these contractors are infamous for the poor quality of their work.
