A 22-year-old man has been arrested for the abduction and rape of the minor girl who had gone missing on Thursday afternoon outside her residence in the Simbhavali area in Hapur district.The girl was rescued from a field in the Kithor area in neighbouring Meerut after locals alerted police when they heard cries of the girl.

"An encounter took place in Simbhavali area and a suspect was shot. A motorcycle was recovered from him which was used in the abduction of the girl. A bag with some clothes was also recovered. The injured suspect has been identified as Anuj Kumar," Hapur superintendent of police Neeraj Kumar Jadaun said.
Anuj, resident of Qila Parikshitgarh in Meerut, is a polytechnic student at a city-based college. According to police, he got married last year and was returning from his in-law`s place in Bahadugarh area in neighbouring Hapur district when he abducted the 4-year-old girl and later took her to a desolate spot in a field in Kithor area in Meerut and raped her.
Anuj fled from the spot after the cries of the girl caught the attention of the onlookers who rushed for help. Subsequently, the police station was alerted.
Police teams from Meerut and Hapur had initiated a massive manhunt to trace him after CCTV footage gave vital clues about the identity of the suspect.
He was arrested after a brief encounter with Hapur police on the intervening night of January 19-20 where he sustained a bullet injury in the leg.
"Sections of rape and relevant sections of POCSO Act was added in the existing FIR of abduction registered at Simbhavali police station," Sarvesh Mishra, Hapur additional superintendent of police (ASP) had said.
On Friday, a group led by locals and relatives of the rape survivor held a sit-in protest at Simbhavali demanding immediate arrest of the accused who is still on the run.
