Lawyers boycott work across west UP to protest Hapur police lathi-charge

Meerut: The Uttar Pradesh Bar Council initiated an indefinite state-wide strike across the district courts of Western UP on Wednesday over an alleged police lathi-charge on advocates on Tuesday in Hapur district.Kunwar Pal Sharma, president of the Western UP Adhivakta Sangharsh Samiti, told TOI, Advocates were protesting peacefully on Tuesday against an allegedly fabricated case pinned on a female advocate. On senior officers orders, the police resorted to lathi-charge, injuring many. We have handed over a memorandum to inspector general (IG) Meerut in the presence of nearly 3, 000 advocates. The strike will continue until an FIR is lodged against the police officers responsible for the attack, and they are suspended.It all started when police had allegedly lathi-charged advocates on Tuesday when they were protesting against registration of a case at Hapur Kotwali police station against a woman advocate and her father around a week ago. The case was registered following a confrontation between the woman lawyer and police when she was going to Ghaziabad in her car. The conflict resulted in injuries to several, including the former Bar Association President Ajit Chaudhary and some police officers.Subsequently, district bar associations in Western UP declared a strike. Additional director general (ADG) law and order, Prashant Kumar, said that a probe has been launched into the incident. He said, "A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of three members, led by the commissioner of Meerut and including the IG of Meerut and DIG Moradabad, will conduct an inquiry. Theyll draft a report within a week, pinpointing those accountable for the disturbance. In the meantime, district police chiefs have been directed to liaise with district bar council officials appealing them to help maintain law and order." Rahul Singh
