SHAMLI: A 50-year-old woman was shot dead by an unidentified assailant while she was sleeping in her house located in Jafarpur village under the Bhawan police station of Shamli on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The victim has been identified as Saroj, who hails from a Bengali family living on the outskirts of the village.The family works as labourers. The victims husband, Babu Kumar, said that they were all asleep when they were awakened by the gunshot. He claimed to have seen a person fleeing the scene. Shortly thereafter, they discovered that Saroj had succumbed to her injuries. The family said that they have no enmity with anyone and are clueless as to why she has been killed.According to the officials, they were informed about the murder at around 5.22 am. The police have initiated an investigation into the murder. A forensic unit and a dog squad have also been deployed to gather evidence. SP Shamli Abhishek told TOI, "A murder case has been registered based on the complaint. The police have collected crucial evidence from the crime scene."
