Meerut: A case has been registered against 51 named policemen, including circle officer (CO) of Hapur and SHO Hapur city, and 50 to 60 unidentified personnel on Wednesday in connection with the lathicharge on lawyers in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, police sources said here.According to a senior advocate at the Hapur bar association, 22 individual complaints were filed by injured lawyers after the lathi charge incident. However, these complaints were consolidated into a single FIR based on a report by Sudhir Kumar Rana, an advocate and member of the Hapur district bar council. The complainant has alleged in the FIR that on August 29 the lawyers were lathicharged by the police personnel while they were returning to their chambers after a peaceful demonstration. They were protesting an allegedly falsely lodged FIR against a female attorney and her father. The incident resulted in injuries to several lawyers, including women. As per the FIR accessed by TOI, the accused policemen have been booked under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 323 (criminal assault), 504, 506 (criminal intimidation), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 354 (assault on woman) and 392 (robbery).While SP Hapur, Abhishek Verma, was unavailable to comment in the matter, Anurag Pandey, vice-president of the UP Bar Council, criticised the police for misrepresenting the charges in the FIR. Pandey, who was in Hapur supporting the lawyers, emphasised the need for unbiased investigation and said, We have demanded FIR against SP and DM Hapur but they have not been included. Total 22 applications were given to police highlighting separate issues. Police have counted all of them as one which is not correct. We demand a fair probe. Rahul Singh
