Gandhi’s statue removed after criticism of ‘distorted face’

Meerut: The Meerut Municipal Corporation (MMC) removed a 12-foot-high statue of Mahatma Gandhi, made from scrap material including bolts and iron sheets, installed seven days ago outside the zone commissioners office in the Civil Lines area. This follows widespread criticism on social media where netizens and locals said the replicas face appeared to be distorted, giving it an "evil look". The replica was installed on October 2 as part of MMCs Kabaad se Jugaad initiative with a budget of approximately Rs 1.3 lakh. The statue was meant to gather local feedback and was not permanent. It will be restructured and installed at a different location, said additional municipal commissioner Pramod Kumar. This inspection was prompted by concerns about the unhygienic conditions in the market. As a result of the inspection, it has been decided that no retail trade of fish will be allowed inside the market during the hours when wholesale trading takes place. Additionally, fish vehicles parked along roadsides may be allowed to park inside the market for a fee. The minutes of the meeting and the inspection report will be submitted to the high court.
