Three farmers booked, one arrested for burning stubble in Bulandshahr

Meerut: One farmer was arrested and three were booked for allegedly burning crop residue at their farms in Bulandshahr, officials said on Thursday. The action comes amid the district administrations drive against stubble burning. "On receiving information about stubble burning in Lakhawati tehsil area, officials of agriculture and revenue departments immediately rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Farm owner Durgesh was arrested and fined Rs 5,000," said Chand Miyan, district information officer, Bulandshahr.On Saturday, three farmers, including a farm owner, were arrested and 15 others from four villages in Bulandshahr were booked for contributing to air pollution by burning crop residue (parali) in their agricultural fields. A fine of Rs 2,500 was also slapped on each offender. As paddy harvest begins with the onset of winter, stubble burning has also started despite the Uttar Pradesh governments repeated warnings. In all, 137 cases of stubble burning have been reported in the state from September 15 to October 8. Aligarh, with 40 cases, tops the chart, followed by Shahjahanpur (18 cases). Pilibhit and Mathura registered 15 cases each. Stubble burning is one of the primary reasons for increasing pollution levels that turn Delhi-NCR into a smog-hit area, affecting a huge population. They also criticized the government for pressuring farmers to use expensive equipment and sell crop residue at low prices to private electricity generating companies. The farmers called for the implementation of the Swaminathan report before further discussions on stubble burning take place.
