West UP districts witness heavy rain, hailstorms

MEERUT: Several Western Uttar Pradesh districts including Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur witnessed heavy thundershowers and hailstorms on Monday. Meanwhile, strong winds were seen in Meerut and Baghpat. Unusual heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds was recorded in Bijnor, resulting in a dip in temperatures by around four degrees to 26 degrees Celsius. According to Nagina Agriculture Research Center officials, at least 15 mm of rain was recorded in the area. The unseasonal rain caused losses to sugarcane, paddy, and gram crops. Dr RS Sengar, a scientist at Meerut-based Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Agriculture University, said, Strong winds and hailstorms damaged standing sugarcane crops and it will also affect the overall yield.
