MEERUT: The committee demanding a bench of the Allahabad high court in Meerut will hold a meeting on Saturday in Ghaziabad to discuss their future course of action. The committee represents advocates from 22 districts of west Uttar Pradesh, and has been demanding a bench here since 1981.The president of the committee, KP Sharma, said, "Its been over 40 years since we have been urging for a bench of the high court here in Meerut.Former prime minister Indira Gandhi had assured us that our demands would be fulfilled, but nothing moved in this direction." Mentioning the pendency in cases, he said, "Almost 52% of pending cases inAllahabad HC involve west UP residents. We have district and session courts but cant file any writs as only the high court or the SC has the power to accept them. The Allahabad HC is over 500 km away from western UP. The central government has to assure us; otherwise, the entire community in west UP will boycott the 2024 general election." Pavitra Narayan, advocate at Meerut Bar Association, told TOI, "If digital hearing is adopted, there would be no need for any physical bench and it would also help those from weaker backgrounds and fighting for justice."
