MEERUT: Over five years after mafia don Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi, 51, was shot dead inside Baghpat jail on July 9, 2018, a CBI investigating team went there on Wednesday to recreate the crime scene. A CBI team comprising six sleuths arrived in the jail and stayed for a couple of hours in the same area where the murder took place five years ago, confirmed Baghpat jailor, Jitender Kashyap. Bajrangi, who had a formidable reputation as the don of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, was held in Baghpat jail for a night due to a hearing in the local court related to an extortion case against him. The post-mortem report indicated he succumbed to 10 bullets after an altercation with inmate Sunil Rathi, a local gangster. Bajrangis wife, Seema, had sensed danger just days before the murder, and held a press conference in Lucknow to express her concerns. After the crime, Seema demanded a CBI inquiry and filed a writ in the Allahabad high court too. Numerous questions remained unanswered regarding security lapses that allowed a firearm into the prison, the absence of CCTV cameras at the crime scene, and the decision to keep Bajrangi in Baghpat jail, which was not initially scheduled. The CBIs Lucknow unit, which initially filed an FIR against Rathi in 2020, couldnt establish a conclusive reason for Bajrangis transfer from Jhansi jail to Baghpat jail. Owing to the slow pace of investigation, the inquiry was then transferred to its Delhi unit in January 2023. The new team had visited the Baghpat jail in April. But on Wednesday, they recreated the crime scene, crucial to piecing together events. Bajrangi was a high-profile criminal and had over 40 cases of murder, loot, extortion and robbery. In 2009, he was jailed for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai in 2005 in Gazipur district, UP. At that time, Bajrangi worked for another gangster-turned politician Mukhtar Ansari who was Rais political and business rival. Ansari was convicted in Rais murder case and given 10 years of imprisonment in April 2023.We also published the following articles recentlyJailed don, ex-UP MLA Vijay Mishra gets 15-year jail for gang rapeVijay Mishra, a jailed mafia don and former MLA, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and a fine of Rs 1 lakh in a gang rape case.
