Kartik Purnima mela set to begin on Nov 17

MEERUT: In view of the Kartik Purnima Ganga Snan Mela at Garh Mukhteshwar from November 17-29, senior police and administration officials on Tuesday inspected the site to oversee arrangements.Last year, over 30 lakh people visited the fair, also known as Mini Kumbh of North India for a dip in the river Ganga. Devotees from Delhi, Meerut, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and other areas assemble, setting up tents on the sandy riverbed.This time, the administration is making arrangements for a larger number of visitors. Roads, electricity, water, parking and sanitation are being readied by the district administration with Hapur district magistrate Prerna Sharma and superintendent of police Abhishek Verma regularly inspecting the site. Officials are focusing on better traffic management to prevent jammed roads, said Abhishek Verma. He added that temporary police stations will be set up on the national highway. "For safety of devotees, police pickets will be set up from Garh flyover to Brajghat Ganga bridge and there will be continuous patrols on the highway," he said.Police, district administration and NHAI officials discussed route diversions. There will be diversion of heavy vehicles from November 23 on the Delhi-Lucknow highway. Directions were issued to close certain sections on the highway to prevent driving on the wrong side. Following instructions of the administration, farmers have started harvesting crops at the fair site.
