Eight UP policemen to be arrested for 2020 custody death of youth

MEERUT: The Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) of Meerut has written to Bulandshahr and Saharanpur police chiefs for arresting eight police personnel involved in the 2020 killing of a man in custody in Khurja police station of Bulandshahr, officials said on Thursday.According to officials, Sonu Kumar (24), a resident of Khurja area, eloped with a girl from his village on December 6, 2020.His family members were detained and harassed in the police station. Police found the couple on December 10, 2020.Sonu was arrested and was found dead in the lockup of Khurja police station the next day. Handing over the body to Sonus family, police personnel claimed he had hanged himself inside the station. The body was cremated without a post-mortem, allegedly after cops pressure.His family accused Khurja police of murdering him in custody and approached the Allahabad high court. On the basis of the courts order, an FIR was registered against 11 people, including eight policemen.Action will be taken as per govt directionsSHO Khurja police station Mithilesh Upadhyay, two sub-inspectors, five constables and three other men were named in the FIR and charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (disappearance of evidence) and others on March 29, 2022. The probe was handed over to CBCID Meerut which found the eight policemen guilty and acquitted three. Superintendent of police CBCID Meerut Alka Singh told TOI that letters have been issued to SSP Bulandshahr and SSP Saharanpur to arrest the accused cops. The accused inspector is currently posted in Saharanpur district, while the two sub-inspectors have retired and live in Agra. The letter has been issued after government approval. The arrests will be made by Khurja police where the FIR was lodged said Singh. SSP Bulandshar Shlok Kumar said action will be taken as per governments directions. The letter is awaited, said Kumar. This directive follows a dispute over an RTI application for CCTV footage at Shivpuri police station. Singh has directed the police to promptly preserve the recorded footage upon receipt of an RTI application until the application and any subsequent appeals are fully adjudicated. This move is in response to concerns raised by Singh on the violation of Supreme Court guidelines regarding CCTV systems in police stations. Singh emphasized the importance of access to CCTV footage in cases involving human rights violations.
