Farmer `harassed` over loan kills self

BIJNOR: A 52-year-old farmer allegedly killed himself in Bhajjawala village under Afjalgarh police station in Bijnor district after he was allegedly harassed and abused by some bank officials for the repayment of a loan he had taken. Police have registered an FIR against unidentified officials from Sarva UP Gramin Bank on Tuesday.Anil Kumars family said he killed himself due to relentless pressure by the bank officials.His son Vipin Kumar said, "My father owned 5 bighas of agricultural land and had taken a loan from the bank. The exact amount is unknown to me. A group of bank officials visited our home on Saturday (November 18). They not only misbehaved with the family but also issued threats, demanding the immediate repayment of the loan. The situation escalated to the point where they verbally abused my father."Responding to the sons complaint, an FIR has been filed against unidentified bank officials under Sections 306 and 504 of the IPC. Afjalgarh SHO Rajesh Singh assured that the police are investigating the matter.The bank officials denied any wrongdoing, saying the claims made by the farmers son were baseless. When approached, a bank official said he had no information regarding the specific amount of the loan taken by the farmer.
