MEERUT: At least six people were injured when two groups of devotees going to the Kartik Purnima fair clashed during a buffalo cart race on the Delhi-Lucknow national highway on Tuesday in Hapur, police said.Two groups were racing their buffalo carts when they collided with barricade in the Simbhaoli area. The buffaloes were injured and this led to an argument between the men."They also started arguing with the police patrol team. The situation was brought under control but some persons were injured and admitted to a hospital for treatment," said Simbhaoli SHO Dharmedra Singh. The devotees alleged they were lathicharged and ill-treated by police. The buffalo cart racing tradition is over 100 years old and happens during Kartika Purnima Khadar mela in the Garh Mukhteshwar area. The races are performed on roads between groups of devotees travelling to the fair. The buffaloes start getting trained six months before the mela. Their rigorous regimen includes racing for many kilometres in the fields every morning.
